Where did the TURKEY come from??

Published by llfackrell under Humor Edit This

Have you ever wondered where we get the tradition of eating turkey on Thanksgiving? I have. I decided to do a little research and see what I could find.

Apparently no one truly knows when the first Thanksgiving was. There has been rumored to have been several before the famous ‘plymouth rock’. Anyway..to the turkey…

Tradition holds that the Plymouth colonists invited ninety guests to feast with them . The exact food prepared that day is still unknown. It’s suspected that the meal included: venison, wild turkey, wild fowl, bass, cod, and Indian corn or maize. Thanksgiving became official in the mid 1800’s and was confined to mostly rural England. New England homes were known for the bountiful meals they prepared. Women would make pies weeks in advance and men spent the mornings hunting or shooting turkeys. The largest turkey’s were chosen for the holiday feast. Meals lasted for hours and people were expected to eat more than their fill. Seemingly, one would think this is where the tradition of the turkey came in but surprisingly this is not the case. The turkey actually didn’t make its first formal appearance as a national thanksgiving staple until after World War II! The poultry industry introduced the heavily marketed hybrid turkey, a larger bird, which then in turn became a symbol of American abundance.

Interesting isn’t it..

Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

Two feet of SNOW! Maybe next week. All we’ve seen in the Carolina’s for the past few years are some pitiful little flurries. When did mother nature suddenly decide that we didn’t deserve a little snow joy? Maybe it’s a childish dream but I’d sure love a good snow! What a great way to get the family in the holiday spirit. And how I savor the idea of hurling a snowball at my hubby and having it pop him right in the back of the head!  I didn’t mean that in spite..simply good old fashioned fun. JESUS is the reason for the season. But a blanket of shimmering white snow on the ground never hurt anybody. So again I say. LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!

Mom’s RANT!

Published by llfackrell under RANTS! Edit This

WHY does my husband insist that he cannot sleep without the TV on in the bedroom?? I understand everyone needs to wind down at the end of the day but seriously…I’m with the baby all the day. When it’s time for bed, oh how I LONG for some peace, quiet, and rest! Leaving the television on into the wee hours of the night is not my idea of relaxation. How can ANYONE rest with all the noise? People lived without a television for thousands upon thousands of years. So all of a sudden he’ll never sleep again without the noise of the television in the background?? I find this very difficult to swallow. In fact, it’s likely the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard! For now, I’ve simply resigned myself to the fact that I’m not going to get a good nights rest and trod off to the living room for another night on the couch until it’s time for the baby to eat. I wonder if any other ladies live with this problem and how they cope? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Co-Sleeping

Published by llfackrell under Baby Edit This

We’ve all heard how dangerous it is to let our babies sleep in bed with us. Chances are your doctor has drilled this into your head whether you’re a first time mom or a veteran. Just how reliable is this advice we’re getting? Is it backed by science or backed by the crib revolution. America is one of the few countries who separate their children at nap time or bed time to sleep alone in a crib. In my opinion this is absolutely heinous! Parents have been duped into believing it’s normal and OK for an infant to cry themselves to sleep. NEWS FLASH. It is NOT OK. If your baby is crying, something is wrong. Perhaps it is just comfort they need and who are we to withhold it?? Does any other mammal on the planet disregard the cries of their infant? I’d say not. So I did a little digging and got the real scoop on co-sleeping.

Research (meaning scientific studies have been conducted) shows that:

-Babies who sleep with their parents sleep more peacefully. They wake up crying far less than an infant in a crib.

-Co-Sleeping infants have more stable temperatures, heart rythms, and fewer long pauses in breathing. They sleep safer.

-LOWERS the risk of SIDS. You may have heard otherwise but this is what the research leans to. C0-Sleeping babies spend more time on their back or side, decreasing the risk of SIDS. Carbon Dioxide exhaled by a parent stimulates babies breathing.

-Co-Sleepers have higher self-esteem, less anxiety, are better behaved, comfortable with affection and become independent sooner.

Many parents are concerned that if they let their child sleep in bed with them that they will never get them out. This is simply not true. When children become more cognitively and emotionally devoloped (typically around age 2 to3), they will usually with little persuasion branch out to their own bed or sleeping space.

There’s no reason to isolate your child and let them cry unneccesarily. Do whats best for your baby. Raise them with comfort and love and the benefits will be immeasurable in the short term and the long term.

Saving Money at the Grocery Store

Published by llfackrell under Saving money Edit This

It seems impossible with the rising costs of food, but saving money at the store is possible. I’m not talking about a few cents here and there either. Try hundreds of dollars a month. Of course this can vary with your shopping habits and size of your family but this is a common average for people who know how to “work the system”. I’ll tell you step by step how to make those dollars stretch and come away from the store with a smile on your face.

1. Buy 2 or 3 Sunday papers every Sunday morning.

Step one is crucial. Sunday morning papers usually contain between 2 to 3 coupon booklets offering savings on variety of grocery items sold in the stores.

2. Get the weekly circulars from all grocery stores in your local area that have the sale items for the week. Paying close attention to sale items and the price difference at each store can save you a lot in the long run.

3. Match coupons with current sale items to maximize savings.

*NOTE: Pay special attention to stores who double or triple coupons. A coupon for 75 cents off an item would be the equivalent of 1.50 0ff (doubled) or 2.25 (tripled). Many items could end up being free or next to nothing by using this principle.

4.Don’t forget about your local drugstores!

Drugstores carry food items and run weekly specials on them as well.

5. Pick one day of the week to go shopping and get everything you need. Limiting grocery runs saves gas and time.

6. If something is on sale and can be coupled with a coupon, use multiple coupons and stock up on the item! This ensures that if you run out of the item, you won’t have to pay full price for another in the near future.

7. Make your list according to the sales and stick to it.

8. And most importantly…NEVER go to the grocery store hungry.

You’ve heard it before and it’s true. When you go to the store hungry, it’s proven that you’re more likely to spend more and make unnecessary purchases.

Stick to the rules and you just might come away with a little more cash in your pocket. Wink

If Noah Were To Build An Ark Today…

Published by llfackrell under Humor Edit This

This was in Sunday’s church bulletin. Too cute not to share…

If Noah Were To Build An Ark Today

In the year 2008, the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in the United States, and said, “Once again, the earth has become wicked and over populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me.”

“Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing
along with a few good humans.”

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying “You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights.”

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah
weeping in his yard, but no Ark.

“Noah!,” He roared, “I’m about to start the rain!
Where is the Ark?”

“Forgive me, Lord,” begged Noah, “but things have changed.”

“I needed a building permit.”

“I’ve been arguing with the inspector
about the need for a sprinkler system.”

“My neighbors claim that I’ve violated the
neighborhood zoning laws by building the Ark in my
yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to
go to the Development Appeal Board for a decision.”

“Then the Department of Transportation demanded a
bond be posted for the future costs of moving power
lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the
passage for the Ark’s move to the sea. I told them
that the sea would be coming to us, but they would
hear nothing of it.”

“Getting the wood was another problem. There’s a ban
on cutting local trees in order to save the spotted owl.”

“I tried to convince the environmentalists that I
needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!”

“When I started gathering the animals, an animal
rights group sued me. They insisted that I was
confining wild animals against their will. They
argued the accommodations were too restrictive, and
it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in
a confined space.”

“Then the EPA ruled that I couldn’t build the Ark
until they’d conducted an environmental impact study
on your proposed flood.”

“I’m still trying to resolve a complaint with the
Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I’m
supposed to hire for my building crew.”

“Immigration and Naturalization are checking the
green-card status of most of the people who want to work.”

“The trades unions say I can’t use my sons. They
insist I have to hire only Union workers with
Ark-building experience.”

“To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets,
claiming I’m trying to leave the country illegally
with endangered species.”

“So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10
years for me to finish this Ark.”

Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine,
and a rainbow stretched across the sky.

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, “You mean you’re not going to destroy the world?”

“No,” said the Lord.

“The GOVERNMENT beat me to it.”

Say YES to Breastfeeding

Published by llfackrell under Baby Edit This

Breastmilk is THE BEST FOOD for your baby! No exceptions! It’s easy to digest and contains all the antibodies and nutrients that are vital during your baby’s first years. Science proves that babies who are breastfed are sick far less often, have fewer allergies, and are at a lower risk of dying from SIDS. In addition to being best for baby, its best for mom too. Breastfeeding after giving birth reduces blood loss and helps get your uterus back to its normal size. It also aids in helping shed the extra pounds you gained while pregnant. Breastfeeding moms typically burn around 500 calories everytime they nurse their baby. 500 calories is a lot of time on the treadmill! Breastfeeding is so far and beyond superior to formula that the American Dietetic Association recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.  The World Health Organization and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding during the first 2 years of life due to all the health and immunological benefits that breastmilk provides. Perhaps the most wonderful benefit that comes from breastfeeding is the closeness it promotes between mom and baby. There’s no better feeling than knowing that you’re providing your child’s basic need for comfort and nourishment.

It breaks my heart to see women ‘choose’ to formula feed their children when most women are able to breastfeed. Formula wasn’t designed to replace breastmilk! It was designed to save the life of children who’s mothers could not breastfeed. Even the companies who produce infant formula conceed that breastmilk is best for baby. I am convinced that if women would turn back to nature and nurse their babies as God intended, there would be far less instance of sickness in these precious children.

There are far more benefits to breastfeeding than I have touched on here. If you are a mother trying to decide between breastfeeding or formula, PLEASE get all the facts and do what is best for your child. If in doubt, talk to your doctor or health care provider. There are many organizations and support groups willing to help. For a more thorough list of breastfeeding benefits please visit www.promom.org/101 . Geocaching

Looking for a little fun outdoors with the family but haven’t a clue what to do?  Geocaching could be the answer. The first thought that came to my mind when I heard that word was, “What in the world is geocaching?”. It’s still relatively unheard of in the U.S. thought it is gaining steadily in popularity. Geocashing is basically a modern day treasure hunt using a GPS device. The name of the game is to locate a hidden container, also known as a “geocache” at a specific location outdoors. These geocaches are hidden in a variety of locations. Currently, there are over 680,000 caches hidden throughout the world. The contents of which differ according to the difficulty and effort put into finding them. After a geocache is found, the finder typically writes about their experience on the official geocaching site and replaces what was found inside the cache with something of equal value for the next seeker to find. Therefore, there is no need to worry about someone finding a cache before you and wasting a trip.  Geocaches have been known to hold everything from letters to cash. There are many different locations to choose from varying in difficulty. For the beginner, I would recommend something with an easy terrain and a low level of difficulty. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to start getting in shape before one of these adventures either. Many require a lot of hiking and climbing so being in fair physical condition is recommended. I don’t recommend this as an adventure for family with young children due to the physical activity demanded and somewhat remote locations of the geocaches. However, for families with older kids, this is a great way to get outdoors, get in shape, and spend some quality time together.

For more information on geocaching and locations of caches near you (or anywhere you’d like to go), you can visit their official site at  www.geocaching.com

Who knows what you might bring home? Smile Happy hunting!
